Growth Drivers of Airport Commercial Services
August 1, 2017, Domodedovo, Moscow Region. The analytics center of Moscow Domodedovo Airport presented the findings of the first phase of research on key trends in the airport commercial services industry. The main phase of the project will coincide with an event for the participants of the airport commercial space development industry - DME Non-Aviation Forum - to be held on September 19, 2017.
In the expert survey of the members of Marketers Club - an open discussion forum hosted by Moscow Domodedovo Airport representatives of the partner companies involved in the airport commercial services industry identified factors affecting customer behavior and business development at airports. Experts assessed the average characteristics of their customer base over time and the degree of influence of various factors on the situation.
According to the market participants, airport cafes and stores are most often visited by travelers aged between 30 and 45, equally men and women. 44% of their customers travel and visit cafes and restaurants as couples. The share of visitors with children is estimated at 15%.
In the first six months of 2017, according to representatives of companies operating at Moscow's airports, the market is still under the residual influence of the economic depression. Respondents note that their customers still tend to save in response to the shrinking of their wealth in the previous period.
The most significant factors in terms of managing the consumer's behavior at the airport are the income dynamics and the location within the passenger terminal. The main driver of business development is, according to the market participants, terminal expansion providing additional opportunities to expand business presence. One of the stimulating factors for airport's non-aviation partners, according to a number of representatives, is the increase in passenger traffic to Asian destinations and the possibility of joint online and offline campaigns with airports.
It is worth noting that the air transportation market is currently showing a positive trend. The passenger traffic at Moscow Domodedovo Airport has been growing since November 2016, and in the first six months of 2017, the number of passengers handled has reached 14 million, which is 10% more than in the same period last year. Against the backdrop of a recovering market, DME is implementing a number of investment projects. The central one is the construction of a new terminal segment (T2) with a floor area of 239,000 sq.m by the opening of the 2018 World Cup. When T2 opens, the combined terminal floor area will be 500,000 sq.m.

DME Non-Aviation Forum for the F&B, retail, and consumer services market participants will be held on September 19, 2017. The agenda includes are partnership development prospects, current trends in the consumer behavior of passengers and airport terminal visitors. At the Forum, development concepts will be discussed for airport spaces as shopping and entertainment destinations, considering the expansion of commercial space after the commissioning of new terminal segments.
