619 Million Passengers Handled by Moscow Domodedovo Airport Over Its 55 Years
April 7, 2017, Domodedovo, Moscow Region. Today, Moscow Domodedovo Airport is celebrating its birthday - exactly 55 years have passed since the day when the order was signed by the director of the Main Directorate of Civil Aviation at the USSR Council of Ministers establishing Moscow Domodedovo Airport.
As part of the official ceremony, a hall of fame was opened in the eastern atrium of the passenger terminal. The event was attended by representatives of Russian Federal Aviation Authority and Domodedovo Municipality, who congratulated the airport's former and current employees on the anniversary.
"This is a historic day for us. First, today is the airport's 55th anniversary. Second, what is more important, we are opening a hall of fame to celebrate the contribution by former employees to the development of Domodedovo. Their names will be displayed in the terminal, so that millions of passengers know the people who built the airport, which is ranked the best in Russia," said Mr. Igor Borisov, CEO at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.
In honor of the seven former employees of Domodedovo, commemorative plaques with their names and personal signatures were installed in the hall of fame.
- Mikhail A. Boyko – started his work at the airport in 1975. He took part in preparing Domodedovo Airport for handling international flights, commissioning of Phase One of the new cargo terminal, reconstruction of the inflight catering facility, the airport passenger terminal, etc.
- Anakenty V. Bondar – started his work at the airport in 1964. He worked as a flight engineer on Tu-104 and Il-18 aircraft, then got certified for Il-62, Tu-154, Tu-144. For 22 years starting in 1977, he led the airport's aircraft maintenance facility.
- Vladimir E. Prokopchuk – started his work at the airport in 1967. His career spanned from aircraft technician to the head of operations at the airport's aircraft maintenance facility. Starting in 1999, he was the CEO of the aircraft maintenance facility. Under his leadership, a new method was developed to maintain aircraft airworthiness - the so-called maintenance-free operation method - for the aircraft Tu-154M and Tu-134, and the labs at the maintenance facility were refurbished and upgraded.
- Leonid D. Sergeyev – started his work at the airport in 1967. His career spanned from TU-144 maintenance engineer to the head of the Domodedovo Civil Aviation Operations. Starting in 1998, he was the CEO of the state unitary enterprise Domodedovo Airport Management. He made a major contribution to improve airport management and to ensure its survival, development, and sustainable operations in the market transition period.
- Arnold A. Stifeyev – started his work at the airport in 1965. He started his career at the airport as a plumbing engineer and progressed to the head of the heat and sanitation services. He made a great contribution to the construction and reconstruction of the facilities of Moscow Domodedovo Airport, Aviatsionny residential community, led the commissioning and the capacity expansion projects at the airport's boiler plants, water intakes, sewerage facilities, and other utilities.
- Viktor S. Shatrov – started his work at the airport in 1978. He began his career as a mechanic. In 1998, he was appointed the managing director of Moscow Domodedovo Airport. Under his leadership, the airport's technical infrastructure was refurbished and replaced, pavings were reconstructed, new landing, communications, electrical lighting systems were purchased and put into operation.
- Vitaly Y. Shakhanov – started his work at the airport in 1978. He began his career as a health officer. In 1998, he was appointed the managing director of Moscow Domodedovo Airport Terminal. Under his leadership, the reconstruction programs of the airport’s buildings and facilities were completed and the passenger terminal was upgraded with new technology. With his direct involvement, a process was introduced allowing prompt interaction with various government agencies - border guards, customs, police, security services, migration and consular authorities.

Commemorative plaques in the Hall of Fame celebrate their contribution to the development of Domodedovo Airport», said Mr. Vladimir Prokopchuk, Chair of the Retirees Association at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.
The first passenger flight from the airport took place on March 25, 1964 on the Domodedovo - Sverdlovsk - Domodedovo route on a TU-104 aircraft. Over the entire period of operation, the airport handled 619,406,500 passengers on domestic and international flights, which is more than four times the population of Russia as of January 1, 2017.
In the 21st century, Domodedovo's most popular international destinations were: Antalya (14.7 million passengers), Hurghada (8.9 million passengers), Sharm-El-Sheikh (7.5 million passengers), London (5.29 million passengers), and Dubai (5.23 million passengers). In 2000-2017, Domodedovo's most popular domestic destinations were St. Petersburg (9.9 million passengers), Sochi (8.3 million passengers), Ekaterinburg (7.8 million passengers), Novosibirsk (7.4 million passengers), Krasnodar (6.2 million passengers).
