Asia Time: Moscow Domodedovo Airport Published an Expert Survey of the Aviation Market

February 7, 2017, Domodedovo, Moscow Region. Analytical Center at Moscow Domodedovo Airport has published a study of the aviation market trends in 2017. As part of the project, the Center's analyst interviewed at the annual DME Business Forum industry experts representing tour operators, airport operators, Russian and foreign airlines. Survey included closed and open questions estimating the probability of an event and the influence of different factors on a scale from 1 to 10.

In the survey, the participants identified following key recovery factors in the international air travel segment and growth support factors in the domestic air travel segment: resumption of flights to Egypt, resumption of charter flights to Turkey, infrastructure development at Russian resorts.

Among hidden opportunities, the experts identified the growth of outward tourism and the advantages offered by Moscow Aviation Hub to the transfer routes from Europe to Asia.

"Moscow Domodedovo Airport sees the prerequisites for the growth of Asian transfer destinations. Presently, the route network of Russian and foreign air carriers in Asia comprises 11 destinations served from Moscow Domodedovo Airport. In 2016, passenger traffic to Asian destinations topped 795,000, a 16.4% increase over the 2015 level",— stressed Mr. Alexey Rayevsky, the airport's Deputy Chief Commercial Officer.

Airlines view as high the probability of passenger traffic restoration to Egypt and Turkey (provided that flights are resumed) to the pre-crisis level of 2014 - 90% and 85%, respectively. At the same time, tour operators are more reserved in their forecasts - 60% and 70% compared to the pre-crisis levels.

Turkey and Egypt were most often referred to by the experts as the most popular international destinations in 2017. Russian airlines and tour operators placed high expectations on Spain, Bulgaria, Greece. In addition to Spain and Greece, foreign airlines focused on the United Arab Emirates, Latin America, and Thailand.

One of the key recovery factors of the domestic air travel market, according to the experts, is the state support to the industry. Support measures include extension of the flight subsidy programs, development of airport infrastructure, development of the low-cost segment. Options proposed by the respondents themselves are also worth noting. These include liberalization of international air links and travel enthusiasm.

According to experts, flights to Sochi and Simferopol will remain in high demand among Russian tourists, however the possible redistribution of passenger traffic in favor of international destinations may decelerate growth in the domestic segment.

Detailed findings of the study are available in the presentation.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is one of Russia's largest aviation hubs. In 2016, the airport handled 28.5 million passengers. The route network includes 190 destinations; 75 of them are unique in Moscow Aviation Hub. Moscow Domodedovo Airport has been rated by Skytrax as the best airport in Russia and the CIS. Members of the world's leading airline alliances - Star Alliance and oneworld - have chosen Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport for their flights to and from Moscow. Moscow Domodedovo Airport is Russia's only airport regularly handling flights operated on Airbus A380, Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
