Passenger Traffic to Exceed 3.5 Million During 2018 World Cup
30 October 2017, Domodedovo, Moscow Region. Moscow Domodedovo Airport held a business event DME Business Forum, which was attended by more than 100 representatives of the aviation and tourism industries. Experts discussed the market prospects in connection with the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
"According to our estimates, the combined additional passenger traffic generated by the World Cup 2018 will be 3.5 mill people at all Russian airports. 1.9 mill of them will travel via the Moscow aviation hub," said Mr. Vyacheslav Grushin, Director of Aviation Marketing at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.
At the forum, industry representatives assessed the present condition of the air transportation market. Mr. Grushin noted that a steady growth trend was observed in passenger traffic over the course of 2017 — in the eight months it grew by 22%. International traffic grew by 36%, Russian domestic traffic increased by 11%.
"Reopening of flights to Turkey played a major role. By the end of 2017, estimated passenger traffic from Russia to the Turkish resorts will be 6.4 mill passengers. Year-on-year, other traditional beach destinations have also grown: Cyprus by 8%, Spain by 29%, Greece by 15%. High growth rates were shown by Thailand and Vietnam - by 105% and 100% respectively," the top manager said.
Mr. Dmitry Zaikin, Head of Customer Group Arrivals and Departures at the Organizing Committee 2018, also spoke at the forum. He presented a report on the specifics of operating the public transportation system during the World Cup 2018.
In addition, Moscow Domodedovo Airport awarded the winners of the Just in Time punctuality contest of spring and summer 2017. Partner airline certificates were issued to S7 Airlines, Rusline, Izhavia, YUVT AERO, Belavia, British Airways, Emirates, Thai International Airways.
