Domodedovo Airport is making Gate Boarding automatic

10 November 2017, Domodedovo, Moscow Region. Moscow Domodedovo Airport has started a trial of eGate turnstiles in the domestic departure area. This technology allows passengers to board the aircraft independently.

"The pilot project is underway in the domestic departure area. A turnstile with the barcode recognition technology was installed at one of the gates. A passenger simply needs to scan a printed boarding pass or a QR code on a mobile device to board the flight," explained Mr. Oleg Korshunov, Project Manager in charge of eGate implementation at Domodedovo Integration, the airport’s business unit responsible for the development of IT solutions.

The airport is considering the possibility of using paperless technology in the new segment of the passenger terminal (T2) with an area of 239,000 sq.m. By the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the first phase of T2 will open at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.

Domodedovo is actively implementing services that are capable of automating passenger handling processes. For instance, since May 2017, the airport has been testing Passenger Access Control (PAC) — a system for monitoring passenger movement during the pre-flight inspections. PAC uses the bar code on the boarding pass to automatically determine the departure sector, check the flight status and let the passenger through the turnstiles to the departure area.

There is a growing demand among air travellers for use of mobile gadgets for the pre-flight procedures. According to a study by SITA , Domodedovo’s partner in the eGate project, 12% of Russian passengers are expected to use mobile apps for self-service check-in in 2017.
